For one thing, smoothies, diet shakes, and protein drinks generally have more sugar in them than your body has need of. The problem with this is that it raises your blood sugar suddenly and sharply, so that your body is forced to release a lot of insulin to control the raise, which even causes it to crash.

Seriously, you don't want your body/system doing this erratic see-saw of blood hormones because it hampers your weight loss program for one, and it isn't really good for your health... for two.

In addition, the average shake designed for weight loss does not even have fiber content. For someone on a diet, you really should not overlook the critical importance of fiber. With fiber, you feel fuller than you are; and the rise of insulin in your body in order to curtail your blood sugar rise is also blunted by it. Sure, there is fiber in fruit smoothies; but you do know that you can reach the fiber better when you eat the pulp from the fruit itself, and not from the brew.

Besides, you may not know it, but the volume of calories in your real food is often not as much as the volume of it that may be packed into the smoothies or shakes that you drink in equal quantity. The fruit smoothie won't even make you feel that full, whereas you could have consumed up to 600 calories in 16 oz. of it. But if you try to chew through all of 600 calories in fruit, you know you will not be able to get past it in one try, when you come to think of it - I mean, who really can sit and wolf down bananas weighing as much as two pounds worth.

Think it through carefully; you want the calories you eat to make the most difference for you when you so badly want to lose weight, no?You don't want to be needy for another 'diet' drink so shortly after you fill up with one, now, or don't you think so?
