Dentist services include preventative care. Dentist services watch for dental and oral diseases like gingivitis. What is oral gingivitis? Gingivitis is a dental periodontal disease that causes swollen, red oral tissue around the teeth. Oral tissues around the teeth can also become sore. A dentist can spot oral gingivitis when your oral tissues are red, swollen, bleed easily. A dentist will always check for oral gingivitis and other periodontal diseases at routine dental check-ups.

Oral gingivitis is usually caused by a lack of dental hygiene and correct dental and oral care habits. Brushing teeth at least twice daily to remove food and plaque is important, but what every dentist will tell you is that flossing your teeth is just as important as brushing your teeth. Dental flossing as part of a dental care routine gets the parts of the teeth where the tooth-brush can't clean. A dentist or a dentist hygiene assistant will floss your teeth as part of a dental cleaning and routine dental services. A dentist or dentist assistant will show you how to floss correctly which is to scrape with dental floss both teeth within the crevasse between teeth. A dentist or dentist assistant will instruct that to use dental floss doesn't mean just putting the floss through each teeth space and up again. The purpose of using dental floss is to scrape out the food and plaque that get stuck between the teeth. Using dental floss once a day is usually sufficient for maintaining dental health.

Another cause of oral gingivitis that a dentist can inform you of is a diet full of sugar. Soda and sweets mix with oral saliva and create a sticky dental paste that sticks to teeth and is difficult to get off. This dental paste is called plaque and when plaque isn't removed it continues to build up on the teeth and irritate the oral tissue around the teeth. This dental build up and irritation of oral tissues is what causes oral gingivitis. Also, the dental bacteria that forms is what causes oral gingivitis. It is important for a dentist to spot oral gingivitis early and treat the dental patient for the oral gingivitis so that this dental periodontal disease doesn't move on to worse dental diseases such as Trench Mouth or Periodontitis, both of which can result in loss of teeth.

A dentist can prescribe an oral mouth wash and instruct a dental patient on how to improve their dental care habits. A dentist can also remove all the dental plaque and other dental build-up that is causing the oral gingivitis and irritating the oral tissues. But, the services of a dentist is limited and can only fix a dental problem, but the dental patient must change their dental care habits and poor diet habits to rid any future oral gingivitis issues as well as for the dental patient to completely return to good oral health.

A dentist can instruct a dental patient on why it is important to improve dental habits and return to dental health so that the dental patient doesn't have worse dental problems if oral gingivitis does not receive the proper care.
