Fashion and photography are two intricately connected fields as a fashion show is incomplete without photographs of the whole affair. Focusing is very essential if you are going to photograph a fashion show on the ramps. Your primary objective should be to focus on the particular model on the ramp at that precise moment. Focus on him/her in such a way that the model along with the designer’s clothes is in sharp focus in contrast to the blurry background. If you plan to further focus on a particular part of the dress or the model’s body, then zoom in and focus well to capture that perfect photograph.
Take your time before you actually click the shutter but do not be so late that the model leaves the ramp along with the dress. Be steady but also be quick to act and react. You can take multiple shots of the same subject but the photos should differ in the angle from which they are shot and also vary the distance and height. This variation will let people reading your company’s fashion magazine, get different views of the dress in focus. In a ramp show, the models and the dresses that they display are indeed the focus of the fashion photographer, but remember to click a few photograph of the audience, especially the star audience as well.
Lighting will determine the essence of photography and in case of fashion photography, you must arrange for drapes and reflectors to be able to display your capability to contrast and play with light and dark aesthetically. The general rule of side lighting is to place the source of the light to 45º of the model’s right or left. Make sure that the lighting is appropriate enough for you to capture your subject in the way that you need to. The drapes and reflectors aid in this process and also ensure that the background is set. You must arrange the background in such a way that it does not take up focus instead of your subject. Preferably, use neutral colors like white or lighter shades of gray.
Like in case of anything that is visual and especially in case of art, your digital fashion photography would not be viewed by everyone with the same perspective, but it is essential that you make your photos clear, vivid and beautiful in order to at least get the audience interested.
