Hemorrhoids or piles, are those swollen veins, that are located in the anus and the rectum. These swollen veins cause inflammation of the nearby tissues and form lumps either inside the rectum or in and around the anus. Those situated inside the rectum are called internal hemorrhoids and those found outside (near the anus) are called external hemorrhoids. The internal ones can get bigger in size and may prolapse through the anus and are termed as prolapsed hemorrhoids. If the hemorrhoids get trapped by the anal sphincter muscles, resulting in blockage of blood supply, it is called a strangulated hemorrhoid.
While in some people, hemorrhoids (especially, internal ones) may not produce any symptoms, others may experience itching in the anal region, bleeding and pain. Some of the common causes for hemorrhoids are obesity, pregnancy, high blood pressure (especially portal hypertension), persistent constipation and straining of bowel movement, heavy weightlifting, sitting for prolonged periods, etc. Whatever may be the cause, hemorrhoids are frustrating and sometimes painful too. It can affect the day-to-day activities of the affected person.
Ways to Get Rid of Hemorrhoids
Treatment Methods: While hemorrhoids can be effectively controlled and treated with some lifestyle changes and home treatments, medication and surgery are unavoidable in some cases. Medication for this condition include topical or systemic analgesics, topical vasoconstrictors and topical corticosteroids. These topical medications are used either in the form of suppositories or ointments. Minimal invasive procedures like rubber band ligation, sclerotherapy, removal of clots by making small incisions, coagulation by infrared or laser rays, etc. There are some surgical procedures, hemorrhoidectomy (removal of excess tissue that causes bleeding), stapling (blocks blood flow to hemorrhoidal tissue), etc. The mode of treatment is decided according to individual's condition. There are various factors, according to which the mode of treatment is decided. This includes the type and location of the hemorrhoids, severity of the condition, symptoms, health conditions of the patient, etc.
Home treatment for hemorrhoids can control the symptoms to some extent. This includes some good hygienic practices and some natural remedies. As far as hygienic practices are concerned, the most important point is to keep the anal area clean. This can be done by cleaning the area with lukewarm water. Using soap for cleaning is not recommended, as it may irritate the skin. Gently dry the area by blotting with a soft towel. Avoid tight underwear and go for those made of cotton. Application of cold compresses on the area may help you in relieving the itching and pain. Instead of dry toilet papers, use moist ones (without any perfumes). A sitz bath can also be really useful. It is a small tub specially designed for those with hemorrhoids. Fill the sitz bath with warm water and soak the rectal area for around twenty minutes. If repeated for three to four times a day, this method will help in alleviating the symptoms as well as to shrink the hemorrhoids. These were some of the natural methods to relieve symptoms of hemorrhoids. You may also use certain herbs for treating this condition. They include triphala, an ayurvedic herb, butcher's broom extract, horse-chestnut extract, aloe vera gel (topical application), herbal teas, like chamomile tea, water boiled with fenugreek seeds, etc. If you want to resort to herbal medicines, do it as per the instructions of a qualified herbal practitioner only.
Lifestyle Remedies: As hemorrhoids are linked to some lifestyle factors, there are various remedies, which can be useful in controlling and preventing this condition. One of the basic causes for this condition is constipation, which can be prevented by intake of fruits and vegetables. In short, you have to consume large amounts of dietary fiber and drink lots of water. Use the squatting position for bowel movements and avoid sitting for long periods. Regular exercises are good for getting rid of hemorrhoids, but, don't go for those which involve heavy weightlifting.
Even though, home treatments, natural remedies and lifestyle changes are found to be effective in controlling hemorrhoids, you must consult your physician, who is the best person to decide the course of treatment, as per individual condition. The treatment plan is based on the type and severity of the condition. You can try any of the above said remedies, after seeking the opinion of the doctor.
