If I ask that question in a huge room of executives, as well as upper level managers the answers will be all over the map, and many are conflicting.
A couple of the usual answers are:
A good leader is someone that empowers those working for him to make their very own decisions.
A leader is someone who gives clear, direct orders, a take charge person that commands his employees.
The very first implies that we let the workers structure their very own minds what to complete, and getting the top result. The second implies that we'd better be somewhat of the micromanager and tell everyone what to do and how to do it.
Aren't those somewhat conflicting?
After we have built a huge list, and almost always the RIGHT answer isn't there, I'll point out to them they've got put several conflicting statements up there.
So, "When you needed to narrow it down to only one thing that defines a really good leader, what would it be?"
Out of all the years I've asked that question of executives, I think only one time has someone even come close towards the answer. The solution is "A leader gets results." I believe that the main reason there have been numerous conflicting characteristics is that most of what we put up there was "situational." A good leader always knows when to make use of whatever tool according to the situation to obtain the outcomes which are needed.
A lot of are stuck in a single mode or another because "that is the right way to do it," such as "empowering" employees. I'll admit that is usually the best way, but you will find employees that require a nudge every now and then, that perform well when given step-by-step directions instead of guidelines.
A lot of are focused on activities, after which get frustrated because they don't get results.
A good leader knows how to uncover the right tool, when to utilize it, and always delivers results.
How often maybe you have heard the comment, "The individual can be a born leader?" There are specific characteristics found in some people who seem to naturally put them in a position where they're explored to become a good leader.
Whether in reality a person is born a leader or develops skills and abilities to become a good leader is open for debate. There are some clear characteristics which are found in good leaders. These qualities could be developed or can be naturally part of the personality. Let us explore them further.
SEVEN PERSONAL QUALITIES FOUND IN A GOOD LEADER
1. A good leader has an exemplary character. It can be of utmost importance that a leader is trustworthy to lead others. A good leader needs to be trusted and be known to live their life with honestly and integrity. A good leader "walks the talk" and in the process earns the right to have responsibility for others. True authority is born from respect for the good character and trustworthiness of the person who leads.
2. A good leader is enthusiastic about their work or cause and also about their role as leader. People will respond more openly to an individual of passion and dedication. Leaders need to be able to be a source of inspiration, and be a motivator towards the required action or cause. Although the responsibilities and roles of a good leader may be different, the leader must be seen to become a part of the team working towards the goal. This type of leader is not going to be afraid to roll up their sleeves and get dirty.
3. A good leader is confident. To be able to lead and set direction a good leader needs to seem confident as somebody and in the leadership role. Such somebody inspires confidence in others and draws out the trust and best efforts with the team to complete the task well. A good leader who conveys confidence towards the proposed objective inspires the best effort from team members.
4. A leader also must function in an orderly and purposeful manner in situations of uncertainty. People look to the leader during times of uncertainty and unfamiliarity and find reassurance and security when the leader portrays confidence and a positive demeanor.
5. Good leaders are tolerant of ambiguity and remain calm, composed and steadfast to the principle purpose. Storms, emotions, and crises come and go and a good leader takes these as part of the journey and keeps a cool head.
6. A good leader, as well as keeping the main goal in focus, can think analytically. Not just does a good leader view a situation as a whole, but can break it down into sub parts for closer inspection. While keeping the goal in view, a good leader can break it down into manageable steps and make progress towards it.
7. A good leader is committed to excellence. Second best does not bring about success. The good leader not just maintains high standards, but in addition is proactive in raising the bar in order to achieve excellence in all areas.
These seven personal characteristics are foundational to good leadership. Some characteristics may be more naturally present in the personality of a leader. However, each of these characteristics can also be developed and strengthened. A good leader whether or not they naturally possess these qualities or not, will be diligent to consistently develop and strengthen them of their leadership role.
