Loving My Raised Garden Bed Kits
Â
I love my raised garden bed kits. My raised garden bed kits were easy to build, and being made of cedar, they have been very durable. My raised garden bed kits have also been easy on my back because I don't have to bend over. My patio is lined with the raised garden bed kits, I have my herb garden bed and some flower garden beds in them. In addition, I have some vegetable garden beds in a couple of the raised garden bed kits.

When to Plant the Raised Garden Bed Kits
Â
Living in zone 5, I usually plant the garden in my raised garden bed kits after 15 May because all danger of frost is past. This is especially important because the garden kits I am talking about are elevated 36 inches above the ground. With these raised garden beds, the plant roots don't have ground under them to insulate them from a light frost. After 15 May, I don't have trouble with the roots freezing.

What to Plant in the Raised Garden Bed Kits
Â
To plant in my raised garden bed kits, I use the square foot garden system. I find this to be extremely easy, and I am able to increase the yield of my garden this way. I plant almost everything that I would plant in a normal garden, except for root vegetables. My raised garden bed kits are six inches deep, which doesn't give enough room for root vegetables, such as potatoes, carrots or parsnips to grow.
Â
I can go out to a raised garden bed and pick a salad. I put four lettuce plants in one square foot of my raised garden bed, 16 radishes in a square foot of the bed, 36 scallions in a square foot, and two cucumbers in a square foot (which I have climbing up a lattice). I have also planted four chard plants per square foot, one zucchini plant per square foot, one pepper per square foot, one basil plant per square foot, and one tomato per square foot. Because my gardens are elevated, I can do all this and harvest them without bending over. I fertilize the plants with a spray fertilizer and they grow big and healthy through the summer season. And, because they are on my patio, I merely have to walk a few steps outside to get the plants I need. This is gardening in its simplest form!

Raised Garden Kits on the Ground
Â
I have only talked about my raised garden kits that sit about 36 inches high. I also have raised garden kits that sit directly on the ground, but raise my garden six inches. I use the same square foot gardening technique for these raised gardens, as well. The roots are insulated in these gardens, so if I plant earlier than 15 May, I only have to make certain that I protect the tops of the plants from late frost.
Â
I really enjoy raised bed gardening. Try raised bed gardening. I bet you'll love it, too.
