In a recession when household budgets are under pressure and less holidays abroad are being taken by families, how are some popular destinations getting more tourists while most are seeing a drop?
Lanzarote is a classic example of somewhere doing well and shares many of the attributes that destinations reporting a surge of interest in a downward market - it's not just the weather forecast for Lanzarote that's contributing to more tourists but other factors as well.
Top of the attributes required this year for holiday destinations as well as good weather is value for money and being in a safe location unaffected by political turmoil - and the latter of these has seen places like Egypt, Turkey and Morocco suffer due to the Arab Spring turmoil directly in or close to their regions.
Value for money is more important than ever for people planning a trip away, and the travel companies have responded to this with more package holidays available, where flights, hotels, meals and drinks are included in what is paid - which enables those tourists opting for this a much clearer idea of what the overall cost is going to be. And with the three Canary islands of Lanzarote, Tenerife and Gran Canaria being promoted as prime destinations it allows all three to look forward to a year when they will be seeing more visitors arrive.
A good example comes from First Choice who now specialise in package holidays only, for a week in late June in Playa Blanca which is widely regarded as a relaxed family friendly resort with good beaches, shops and restaurants - included are flights, hotel and transfers to and from, plus meals and drinks for two adults and a child - £500 a person for everything.
The hotel in Playa Blanca is the Holiday Village Flamingo Beach, and in June the Lanzarote weather forecast is normally really good.
Today more than ever it's easy to check the standard of accommodation through online review sites such as tripadvisor, and to see if the apparent great deal being offered is likely to live up to expectations, and going by recent reviews what First Choice is offering is indeed excellent value.
With some of the apartments offering sea views, most guests have been impressed with both the friendliness and professionalism of the hotel's staff and the cleanliness. Importantly on an all inclusive trip the food is rated as good and with the beach easily accessible and the harbour and town a couple of minutes walk it's no surprise that Lanzarote is pulling in the tourists when there are hotels as good as the Flamingo Beach on offer at affordable prices.
Similar deals can be found on the neighbouring Canary islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, and similar to Lanzarote the weather is good enough year round that a winter visit to get away from the cold and rain for some sunshine ensures that most resort amenities are available to holidaymakers no matter when they visit Lanzarote, Gran Canaria or Tenerife.
All inclusve holidays means that holiday makers don't have to pay anymore for meals and drinks at their hotel, but if they do decide to venture out for day trips or to sample local restaurants British tourists will be getting a double benefit in Lanzarote as the pound is buying more Euros, in fact more than in the last four years with predictions by Forex analysts that the Euro will slip even further over the summer months.
With the good hotels, excellent value offered by the travel companies, the pound buying more Euros and warm weather year round the fact that some of her competitors such as Turkey and Egypt have a safety image problem at the moment all adds up to why Lanzarote is bucking the trend and attracting more tourists while there's a recession going on.
