So you have decided you need a new challenge in your exercise routine. You want something fun, but also something that is going to make you work. All over the country, mud running events have cropped up, offering just the new type of experience people are looking for. Preparing yourself and training for mud run races requires more than you may think.
Sure, these affairs are designed to be a good time for all involved. People laugh, get very dirty and many teams even dress up in silly and fun costumes so they stand out in the crowd. When you get right down to it, however, it is still a race, and one that involves endurance and good cardiovascular strength.
Most of these races are more than just running five or ten kilometers in the mud. They really should be considered obstacle course races because that is what most of them involve. Be prepared to face varying objects throughout the race, like bales of hay, swinging on ropes and climbing over walls. You will find yourself not only running, but crawling, sprinting, jumping, climbing and even swimming in many parts of the race.
There are several things you may want to do in order to train yourself so you are ready to take all of this on. First, be sure you choose a distance that you know is within your physical capabilities. Many races offer three, five and ten kilometer races, which roughly equal out to three, six and twelve miles respectively. Make sure the distance you choose is one you are comfortable trying.
You may want to add some cardiovascular exercises to your training regimen to get yourself ready. Sprinting and jumping rope are just a couple of things that you can try to increase your stamina. Remember that since it is more than just running you will need to prepare your body for other types of exercise.
You will also need to add strength so that you can take on the obstacles set out for you. Strength in your legs, arm and core will all be necessary for you at some point in the race. If you encounter a high wall climb using only a rope, you will need great strength in your arms and legs to clear it. It may be beneficial to you to begin some type of strength training in advance of the race so you are fit and well prepared.
Before you enter the race, check out the website of the group conducting the race. They may offer you tips of what to expect so you can train properly. They may even offer you a training routine so you can prepare yourself.
Try not to let all the hype you may hear before the race scare you off. As long as you employ some proper training for mud run races, the events themselves should be fine. Also remember that it is all supposed to be about having fun and a good time, so even if you are not in the best condition you can still enjoy yourself.
