Over time, and without proper maintenance, the grout between tiles can get stained and dirty. If you want to knowhow to seal grout, rest assured, it's not as hard as you might imagine. But first, what is grout? Think of it as the gel that holds tiles in place. Moisture is the number one enemy of grout, and hence it should be shielded with a good-quality sealant.

Before you begin, make sure the sealant you buy is the same color as the grout, and that the product is safe for your tiles.

First, remove all moveable objects from the area you will regrout. You should also clean the tiled surface so the grout lines are nice and clean.

Use the tip of the applicator to apply an even coat of sealant on the grout. Grout sealers are liquid solutions--thick and off-white in color. After you lay the sealant with the tip, the grout lines will get moist and look darker. As your work, the sealant, in some cases, may notflow from the applicator easily; if that happens, press the tip against the grout more forcefully, and try experimenting by holding the applicator in different angles.

Choose one corner and work your way until you have sealed the whole surface. Working on random areas of the wall, without keeping track, will make the project more difficult to complete.

It's not a big deal if some of theliquid sealant gets on the tiles. Although it's a good idea to try and keep the grout sealant off ceramic tiles, rest assured a little dab won't be disastrous. You can easily get rid of grout sealant without any visible damage to the tiles.

After applying the seal, let it harden for up to 24 hours. Waiting for the specified duration will enable the liquid to settle, and form a protective barrier over the grout. Ideally, grout should be sealed once every 12 months.

Another reliable method of grout maintenance is to spray the whole tiled area. For ceramic tiles, this approach is somewhat more efficient; the sprayed-on sealant will evaporate, while retaining the glazed look. The spray will soak and seep into the grout lines, forming a protective layer of coating.

Although a spray-based product may be considerably more convenient to apply, be sure to research this kind of grout sealant before you use it.

According to some home-repair enthusiasts, spray-on sealants are not able to achieve the same exceptional results as brush-on or applicator-based sealants. Sprayed-on sealants may be sometimes to blame for damaging tile caulking.

If you want a clean and hygienic bathroom or kitchen, it's imperative that you understand how to clean tile floors or how to seal grout. Grout is an absorbent substance, and excessive moisture or humidity can demote the splendor of any tiled surface. Learning how to seal grout or how to clean grout on tile floors is a simple process, and rewards your hard work with years of well-maintained tiled walls and floors!
