You don’t want the kids to spend the entire summer indoors playing video games but if you don’t have a lot of money in the summer budget, you may have no idea of how to get them out of the house. If you know where to look, there are a number of low cost activities that can be lots of fun.
•Many farms offer the opportunity for visitors to learn about all the different animals and chores that take place on the farm. This is an educational and fun way to spend a day without spending a lot of money.
•Visit an apple orchard. Kids will love picking their own fruit. They will also enjoy picking their own fruit from other types of orchards or from a strawberry field.
•You don’t have to go to the natural wonders of the world to enjoy the magnificence of the earth. There are caves, mountains, all types of beautiful scenery to be found across the nation. You may even have some popular tourist sites that you haven’t visited in your own area. Make this the year that you finally check out what your region has to offer.
•Go to the aquarium. Your children may not know how fascinating aquatic mammals can be until they see them up close. Nothing is more exciting than watching a real shark swim over your head, or getting an up close look at a sea turtle or dolphin.
•Go on a photography treasure hunt right in your own backyard. Give kids a list of things they need to find and have them take pictures of them. Print the pictures to put in their scrapbooks!
•Fix the youngest kids a summer basket with all their favorite things to do outside. Include a variety of sidewalk chalk, bubbles, and tools to use in the sandbox or swimming pool.
•Invest in a swimming pool. Even though you can’t afford a big pool, that doesn’t mean it won’t be worth the trouble of putting a small, inexpensive one in your backyard. Of course, you will need to supervise while the kids are using it so you might as well get one that’s big enough for the entire family! The inflatable models are available in all sizes and are much less expensive than the sturdier styles. Just inflate, fill with water, and slather on the sunscreen for a favorite backyard activity that’s sure to be enjoyed by all!
•Purchase one of the outdoor activity collections for the backyard. These can include a variety of games like croquet, badminton, soccer, etc. These are available in a wide price range and for different age groups. Children will love having different activities to choose from.
Always have a back up plan for rainy days like coloring pages for the little ones or a cooking project for the older kids. Just try to keep them outside and active any time the weather will allow and keep them protected from the sun or too hot temperatures!
