This article is to explain what hypothyroidism is, in the simplest way possible.

At the front of your neck, right below the Adams apple (or imaginary in women)!, is a gland called the thyroid gland. This gland makes hormones that make your body work better. The hormones are released and basically their job is to keep everything inside your body going. If your thyroid gland stops making enough of these hormones and it starts effecting the way your body functions then you are suffering from HYPOthyroidism. If your gland begins overworking and making too much of these hormones then you will be suffering from HYPERthyroidism.

So if your thyroid gland does not produce a regulated amount of these hormones that help your body work, it s either going to be working too well or not well enough . In hypothyroidism, where the thyroid is not producing enough of this hormone, your body begins to slow down as though it is running out of fuel. It will continue to do so until you actually begin to experience symptoms that will affect your every day life.

You may feel really, really tired, all the time, even though you re actually getting a good amount of sleep. Alongside this is lethargic feelings, weakness in muscles, no energy or motivation.

It could be hard to concentrate, loss of memory function and lack of focus and decisiveness. If you feel generally scattered and not quite on top of things mentally, this could be an indicator.

Dry skin and hair, brittle nails and hair, cracked knees, heels and elbows. These are all signs that something is not right as well.

More sensitive to cold, hands and feet always cold. Complaints when everyone else finds the temperature comfortable.

Depression

Constipation

Heavy or irregular menstrual periods in girls and women.

If you re wondering why you are suffering from these symptoms, there are a few possibilities.

You may have another condition that caused you to develop hypothyroidism such as Hashimoto s Thyroiditis. This is a disease where the body attacks itself rather than bad things in the body as it should.

We spoke about HYPERthyroidism before as being the opposite malfunction to hypothyroidism and the over production of thyroid hormones. Some treatments for an overactive thyroid can result in causes your thyroid to become underactive. This is no reason to be concerned about treatment, as long as your hormone replacements are taken as instructed. It may take your doctor a little while to figure out the best treatment dose for you so you can get maximum benefit from the hormones.

Treatment of thyroid tumours or radiation for other cancers can be a cause.

Other causes include problems in a gland inside the brain called the pituitary gland, iodine deficiency, sub acute and postpartum thyroiditis and interference from drugs.

Treatment for this condition usually involves hormone replacements and although it can take a few months for you to feel better it would be well worth it.
