Don't feel pressured and take your time in deciding what you like and what fits your tastes as well as how you live. It really doesn't matter if the modern look is coming back in a big way if you like a simple country design. There's no sense in spending an excess of money on fine furniture if you have a growing family that would be better suited to a more informal style of furniture. It is your home and the most basic premise of home remodeling and design is that you feel comfortable and relaxed in your surroundings.
It might be difficult for you to settle on a style that is you. You might find that you like a few different styles or aspects of different styles but once you settle on what's right for you, that's when things start to get really exciting.
