There’s not too many among us who don’t, whether boldly or secretly, make some kind of promise to do better, be better or feel better every time New Year comes around. Although most resolutions are made with the best of intentions, it is a sad fact that a large proportion of them go by the wayside even before the streamers and balloons are relegated to the rubbish heap. Anyone who drives for a living, be they long distance lorry drivers or those doing courier jobs, knows how hectic this time of year can be, but deciding on your New Year’s resolution can be a great way of passing the time when you’re stuck in a traffic jam! Here’s a few you may or may not like to consider.
Lose Weight & Give up Smoking
Yes well, now those old chestnuts are out of the way, let’s move on...
Stop Talking on Your Mobile While Driving (Even With a Headset)
Ok, when you’re working in courier jobs this one isn’t always possible, however, cutting down on non necessary calls certainly is. Several studies have shown that even when using a hand free device, a driver experiences the same level as distraction as if they were using hand held, as it is actually the conversation itself which is distracting. As well, these studies have shown that by talking on a mobile whilst driving, a normal young adult’s reaction time is slowed to that of an elderly person, or that of a person who can be defined as legally drunk.
Learn to Belch the Alphabet
Strange but true, according to an internet survey, this rates quite high on the list of popular New Year’s resolutions. Well, there’s something to be said for multi skilling while on your courier jobs. Tip – start with the vowels first.
Road Etiquette Anybody Need a Hug?
When it comes to on the road etiquette, we’re all grown up enough to know that two wrongs never make a right no matter how good that return wrong might feel! So how about resolving to keep your cool in traffic; show bad drivers some love instead of a couple of fingers; and generally lead by your own courteous example. Someone who takes on courier jobs will spend more time than the average commuter experiencing traffic snarls and gridlock, or being cut up by a yummy mummy in a Range Rover. But it’s almost a guarantee that you’ll feel so much better waving someone through with a smile and a flourish, than by bursting a couple of neck vessels hurling insults towards an arrogant shadow behind a tinted window. If that hasn’t convinced you, how about this aggressive driving is linked to nearly half of all traffic incidents.
Seat Belts – Necessity not Accessory
It can be all too tempting, when you’re rushing around trying to fit in all your courier jobs, to leave off your seat belt if your next drop off is just around the corner. Statistics show that one in five motorists will be involved in an incident in any twelve month period and further, not to put a dampener on your New Year, over half of all road fatalities could have been prevented had the victim been wearing a seat belt. Those statistics are reason enough, but there’s also the issue of a fine or loss of your licence. Buckle up – and happy New Year!
