Encourage your kids to get the right amount of exercise. Your kids should be outside playing at least a few hours every day, barring some bad weather. Turn those HDTVs off and unhook the gaming systems. Make sure your kids are going outside to play in the open air where they'll remain active and healthy.

Help your child to refrain from overeating at mealtimes. With the rise in childhood obesity in our country, it is extremely important to help our children to recognize when they are still hungry and when they tend to eat out of boredom. When your child cries, "I'm still hungry!" suggest another activity or maybe a glass of water instead. If they really are hungry, they will let you know very shortly. Then encourage them to have a healthy snack such as veggies with a low-fat dip, or some fruit. Sometimes they really are hungry, but by distracting them for a few minutes, you may find that they were just looking for something to do.

A great parenting tip is to let your child make their own decisions sometimes. When you always make decisions for your child, they'll grow up being incapable of making their own decisions. This can really hurt them in the long run. Give your child a little independence sometimes.

For young children, don't underestimate the power of naps. They need more sleep than an older kid. Children can usually stop napping around five or six years old. Young toddlers should be taking up to two naps a day, and children 1.5 and older should still be taking one nap per day.

Spend time with your children. While there has been a movement in recent years for parents to focus on "quality time" with their children, most children simply want "quantity time". Even if you're not doing anything, your child enjoys being around you - savor it. In addition, spending time interacting with young children is vital to their intellectual development.

Reinforce solid habits in your children early. As a parent it's your job to encourage good habits such as studying, exercise, and being of sound mind and body. The involvement in your child's life pays off immensely in the ultimate end. While children all differ from a basic level, parenting can either stimulate or restrict certain behaviors, and lessons learned early carry on to their adult lifestyle.

Teaching your child to read is very important; however, it is also just as important to teach your child to enjoy reading. The latter can sometimes be tricky to do but there are ways to encourage your child to read. One of the best ways to do this is to let your child choose what they want to read. Take the time to bring your child to the library every week so that they can figure out on their own which kinds of books they enjoy reading. It can also help improve their reading ability as the child will naturally start to become eager to read more difficult materials and grow out of the children's section.

A great tip for any parent is to demonstrate consistency and follow-through in all interactions with children. Parents who continually issue the same commands and potential consequences and fail to see them through will likely end up with children who are unwilling to listen or behave. Standing by your statements will teach kids to pay attention and regularly do what you ask of them.

Help the child to develop routines by establishing a schedule very early. If you give them specific times for different events they will begin to naturally adjust to these times. This will help to make shower, eating and bedtimes much easier. The child will also feel more secure.

It is important to stand by your child when the going gets tough and they are having a hard time with something. All children go through one point or another where they feel bad about themselves. As their parent, it is your job to make them feel better through encouraging words or actions.

When you're out an about, make sure you introduce your child to anyone you meet. This helps their self-esteem and gets them used to meeting new people. If you don't introduce your child, you make them feel invisible and ignored. It's important that your child feel loved and like they're part of the family.

An important tip to consider in terms of parenting is to make sure that you never force your children to eat when at the dinner table. This is important because this may lead to over eating later in life. By removing the mental device that judges when to start and stop eating, your child may over eat later in life.

As stated before, parenting involves raising children from infancy to adulthood. Parenting is a long lasting process where parents teach children values and nurture creativity. Using the advice provided in this article, you can make sure you raise your child in the best way you can, so that they become respectable adults.
