If you plan to keep area rugs in the same section for a period of time, you should invest in rug pads. These pads are protectors for those pieces that get a lot of foot traffic. They do come in different sizes and can be easily placed under the majority of the large rugs.

There is also the setup of having them placed under area rugs, which are smaller. This is especially important if you will be using them for a long time. Even though they are more common for larger rugs, you will still need to get them for the smaller ones as well.

There are various pad sizes for area rugs. You can find them in measurements of 2X4 feet, 4X6 feet and runners that are 2X8 feet. They are available in different finishes. They can be used for hardwood, water-resistant pads, premium cushion pads, and various others. You will find that there will not be much need for cushion pads.

Not only should the rug pads complement the rugs in your home, but they should also be safe enough to protect people from slipping or falling. Your rugs will not slide around all over the place.

Pets and children are the prime targets for having an accident on them. Make sure to identify the high-traffic ones and set them aside to have the pads placed on them. They will also protect the hardwood floor from being scratched up.

You can also get waterproof carpet pads. The material used with these can help to prevent messy spills from being sucked up in it. It will also be easier for you when it's time to clean the rug.

When you decide to get a new rug, get a new pad along with it. If you don't, you will have to deal with unpleasant odors from the old rug due to wear and tear.

If you get one large rug pad, it can be cut down to size to make several of them. Since area rugs are basically small, the smaller pads can be used for the other pieces that you have. In order for it to fit, draw an outline of the shape and cut it a few inches smaller. The rug will be longer and no one will be able to see the pad.

Make sure you always buy from a reputable company just in case you need to return a rug pad or need service.
