Siena is Tuscany's true gem, a beautifully preserved medieval city that has always held its traditions. After meandering the medieval streets, stopping for a coffee and local pastry or moving in and out of Siena's elegant shops and taking in beautiful monuments and last but not least, enjoying the typical Italian Wine. A wine tasting or a wine class with a nice meal will delve you deeper. Here are a few places that you would like to walk in when you are in Siena.
When you have arrived to Siena by road, take a short walk to Via Banchi di Sopra. This place gives you references to why city has always been wealthy. The first place to in is little piazza Salimbeni that houses the headquarters of monte dei paschi di Siean, the worlds's oldest bank. This bank has been in function since 1472. The place is lined with nice shops and hotels and the street with eventually lead you to Piazza Del Campo. Walk down the road for a nice window shopping. This place will lead you to well known coffee shop Nannini.
At Café Nannini, you can enjoy some amazing coffee and excellent pastries. Pay the cash and counter and get the slip and then order. There are some local pastries, cookies and cakes. These are essentially prepared in medieval recepies. You can also check out the panforte a low calorie cake made of nuts, dry fruit, sugar, honey, spices and covered within icing sugar. It is served with coffee. Local cookies can include ricciarelli and cavallucci, heavy cookies made with similar ingredients. The former is almond based while the later is cavallucci is made in some spices and dry fruit.

This is the host to city's most famous horse race – Palio. This race is organized here twice a year and this custom has been carried from 600 years. The piazza is turned into racetrack for dangerous bareback horse jockeys. This is held every year 2nd of July and 16th August. The shell shaped piazza was paved in 1349 in nine sections to mark the governance of nine. This contrasts closely to chaos of medieval streets. This has been constructed in a way that is looks like a winding medieval street. There are eleven small streets that will get you in. The Piazza slopes downhill towards the city.
Your next destination on Siena is one of its most striking monuments the cathedral II Duomo. This structure was raised in 1215 and is characterized by black and white marble interiors and exteriors.
