By using a few interior design tricks even you can make a tiny room seem spacious. By taking an honest look at your room and seeing if any of these interior design secrets apply to you, your home can become more pleasant to live in and a real refuge for you and your family.

While hiring a contractor to tear down some walls or add a few hundred square feet onto your living space might be ideal, not all of us are ready for that kind of committment. Effective interior design can bring about a change that might make you feel like you've added some living space to your home and it might only cost you a fraction of the cost of a hiring a construction crew thans to these tips.

If you feel that your rooms are dark and closed in, lighten them up with some good lighting and throw the curtains open and let in some light. Some can lights or track lighting can change the whole look of your room and opening things up to the outside can give the unconscious effect of spaciousness as you view the out of doors through a window across a room.

It's probably common knowledge but I'll hit on this point anyway. Rooms that are painted in a light color or wallpapered with a paper that doesn't have a dark or heavy design on it will make a room seem larger than it actually is. Dark furniture can also make a room seem smaller while light furniture and coverings allow a room to appear larger. If you are stuck with the furniture that you have for the moment, a nice light colored throw or quilt draped over a couch can help to give you the same effect until the time comes to replace the furniture in this room.

While we all struggle with clutter in different parts of our house, a room filled with a lot of stuff or clutter will appear smaller than one that is neat and tidy. Having more furniture than a room can hold will also make a room feel cramped. Tables with clutter stacked upon them and things lying about can add to this effect and make a room appear small. Children's toys might be a fact of life but finding a good place for them when the kids aren't playing with them might make your room feel more spacious.

If it's been a while since you rearranged your furniture, it might be time for a little change. Be experimental and see if the jigsaw puzzle pieces of your houshold furniture might fit together better in a different configuration. Think outside the box and try something different. Your couch doesn't always have to go on the wall opposite the television. Try sticking it in a corner or hiding it from view against a wall that you can't see when you walk by the room. These changes don't have to be permanant and you might find an arrangement that suits your room better and adds that illusion of space.

While it might be impossible to cover all aspects of interior design that you might use to make your small rooms feel larger, I hope these home decorating tips help you to achieve your goals. If you just can't stand it any more and you feel like you're living in a tiny little box, try some of this interior design advice and make that little room big.
