The other day I heard a really interesting story about a farmer whose name happened to be Patience. Patience had spent many sleepless nights thinking about all of the success and prosperity that he wanted for himself and his family.

Patience decided that he would start to grow a crop that no one in his town was currently growing. He went to the local general store and asked the store clerk if he could look at all the seeds that they had for sale. Patience came across a package for a funny looking plant called bamboo. Now Patience knew nothing about bamboo but he had read on the package that it was considered to be the strongest plant on earth.

So he bought the bamboo seeds along with his usual corn seeds and planted an entire field of bamboo. Patience watered and tilled the land the entire first year. Sadly, at the end of the first year it appeared that his bamboo crop was a bust. There was not even as much as a sprout of bamboo. All of the other farmers laughed at him and told him that his family was going to suffer for his foolishness. Luckily, he had harvested just enough corn that year to get by.

A bit discouraged, he continued to water and care for his bamboo believing that the laws of nature would hold true. The second year, he saw a little growth but about half way through that year, the bamboo plant seemed to wither. This short lived success did, however, give Patience some hope so he decided to continue with the simple disciplines of watering and weeding.

What Patience didn t know was that the bamboo was growing....strong, deep roots underneath the surface. One morning, Patience woke up bright and early and got ready to go do what he always did every morning....go take care of his bamboo. When he walked outside, he couldn t believe his eyes. His bamboo had grown at least 18 inches. His crop continued to grow at this rate almost everyday from that day forward.

Patience s inspired action, commitment, consistency and belief made him one of the wealthiest farmers in the land. Not only was he able to give his family a better life but generations after him were able to also reap the rewards.

This story is a great analogy of how starting a new business often works. Sometimes you start a new business, do a little work and nothing seems to be happening. You know what I mean, you post on social media networks, you tell your friends, you pass out business cards, you shoot a video, you tweet , you visualize and it seems that you have nothing to show for it. About 95 of people will quit at this point.

You may not realize that those business success seeds you planted are growing roots that you can t even see. To have any chance of success, you have to keep going.

Success leaves clues. If you study others who have been successful in any form of business, you will see that they maintain simple disciplines. It s these simple disciplines compounded over time, just like in the case of Patience and his bamboo, that will help get you to where you want to be.

So keep watering and caring for your business success seeds and know without a doubt that your harvest is coming!
