Drifting is getting to be more and more popular by the minute. Pretty much everywhere we notice, on the street and in the stores, drifting is on fire. Ever since drifting busted out onto the mainstream with help from Hollywood films and with the rise in drifting lovers, the surge for wanting to quickly learn how to drift, like they see in the flicks is growing rather quickly.
Sure drifting feels very easy, only just drive really quick and get your motorcar sideways and smoke the rear tires. But as you'd know if you've already tried drifting, it isn't so simple as they make it look on the big tv screen.
This is the short drifting course for newbie. The very basics of drifting. Firstly, here's what you should have:
1. You need a car - ideally rear wheel drive.
2. It needs to be a manual car preferably. Automatics are harder to drift but not impossible.
3. You need to go practice in a wide open place where its legal and safe. Drift days are the place to go.
4. You'll need a few spare wheels. Obviously.
Now, this is what to do:
1. You want to practice doing rings or donuts in one spot on the donut pad or wide open flat area surrounding a pilon / cone. Do not go straight to the circuit aiming to drift around corners on your first time attempting drift.
Do donuts to the right, after that change and do circles to the left. Beging with small circles and then get bigger.
2. After you have mastered the donuts, you may start to use the handbrake and attempt some 180 degree spins. Set-up Two pilons about 100 feet apart and go up and back doing 180 handbrake turns.
You should not try to drift out of the turns yet, just get used to your handbrake and feeling of the slide of your car. Once you are able to get it nice and smooth, you can try drifting out from the slide.
Be aware: Maintain the handbrake on more than a split second. Slide it right around with the handbrake until you're facing the way you want to go then you are able to power out.
3. Always keeping the Two pilons where they are, now you can try figure-8 drifting around the pilons. In the same way you we're working on in the 180 degree spins, use your handbrake to slide it right around and then power out straight, lining yourself up for the other side of the pilon at the other end. Do it again and try and get next to the pilons with your ront bumper as you can - touching the clipping point - much like the specialized drift drivers!
