The ICAEW or Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales was established in 1880 by Royal Charter. This organization has a member of about 140,000. Almost 15,000 members of these people work and live outside UK. The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales has 9,000 students. This institution is a member of CCAB or Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies that was formed by the bodies of major accountancy professionals in Ireland and UK in 1974. All the members of the institution are qualified accountants and they have all undergone tests and trainings to pass the qualification test. If an accountant is qualified, they will be automatically a member of the institution.

The examinations have two stages, which include the advanced stage and professional stage. The members of the equivalent bodies in some countries like Switzerland and European Economic Area can also be admitted to be a member after they passed the aptitude test, it is provided by the citizen of Switzerland or EEA state. All ICAEW members will have their designations FCA or ACA after their names.
