Who says you can't teach an old dog with new tricks? No matter how persistent your pooch is, these 10 insider tips from expert dog obedience trainers will improve your dog's behavior in no time.

1. Begin training as soon as possible. While older dogs can definitely be trained too, younger dogs will pick new habits more quickly, and will be more likely to maintain these habit patterns throughout their lives.

2. Teamwork is key. Each member of your family should follow the same plan when it comes to training in order to ensure success. For instance, if your husband says "stop" when he wants your dog to stop rummaging through the garbage, but you say it when you want the dog to sit down, you'll confuse the dog and thwart your own training efforts.

3. Be consistent. Remember that there's no such thing as "just this once," when it comes to dog training. Periodically indulging your dog's unwanted behavior might make things easier in the short term, but they won't cultivate a well-trained dog in the future.

4. Set clear boundaries. Decide in advance exactly what the "rules" for your dog will be. One of the major mistakes owners make in training is not being specific enough in their goals and expectations. That's why the first step in many dog training classes is to write a list of everything you expect your dog to accomplish.

5. Understand that a dog is a dog. There's no doubt that your dog is a beloved member of your family; but he or she isn't a child, or a baby. For the best training success, acknowledge your dog's unique place in the world - and work with it, not against it.

6. Discipline, don't punish. It's important to let your dog know when he or she has acted in a way that deviates from your expectations; however, never let punishment creep into the equation. Discipline should always be a goal-focused activity of helping your dog in developing better habits for the future. It should never be punitive in nature.

7. Adjust your expectations. Remember that each dog has special needs. Don't attempt to train a pit bull as you would a golden retriever. Also remember that a dog's environment has a lot to do with how they're trained. Dog training in Florida might be much different than dog training in Minnesota.

8. Be a leader. Dogs are born and bred to follow the lead of a strong human. Don't be afraid to step into a leadership position with your dog. Remember that good leadership isn't about bossing your dog around - it's about making your dog feel safe and supported.

9. Structure is key. Dogs feel safest, and are most responsive to training, in a structured environment. Set a firm schedule for walks, play time, feeding time, and bed, and your dog will quickly settle into a routine. He might even bring you his leash when it's time for your daily walk.

10. Exercise. Perhaps more than any other single activity, exercise has a dramatic effect on your dog's behavior and lifestyle. Aim to provide your dog with at least 30 minutes of elevated activity, twice per day, and you'll be amazed at the results.
