Over the last decade or so, ceiling speakers have really jumped into our collective consciousness. Most people forget that it wasn’t that long ago that these luxuries were really only found (maybe) at movie theaters. A combination of the economic boom of the 1990’s, manufacturers’ ever onward moving desire to “nichify” their product selection, and the exponential growth, refinement, and development of technological solutions has led us to the point where a large number of homes in the developed world are able to afford high quality sound speakers to be installed in their ceilings. We have truly come a long way.
So what is the benefit of using ceiling speakers in say your living or entertainment room? That is what this article will explore in depth.
For one, if a speaker is lodged in the ceiling, then it’s not going to get in anyone’s way. It’s not on the floor where it can be tripped over, and it’s not propped up on a table somewhere where it can fall off easily. In fact, it’s not even mounted on the wall where it still might have to be avoided as one walks past it. SO that is the first and most obvious but often overlooked benefit of setting up your sound system this way.
Another great thing about ceiling speakers is that they have evolved so much lately that they can now produce super high quality sound, just like any other speaker. In the past, they had been limited by their small size. Engineers always do take time figuring out how to give the same results in ever smaller “boxes”; think of the microchip and how much more it is capable of now than it was in the 60’s. The magnitude of change is truly astonishing.
Most ceiling speakers come with a cage or grid across the front of them – this would extend downward covering the actual speaker when installed. And these cages are paintable, so that you can blend this piece of technology into your room by making it the same color as your ceiling. That way, when you sit everyone down to watch Terminator 4 or whatever is your fancy, they will be blown away by how the sound is coming from all over. They won’t even have noticed the speakers above their head! This trick will impress again and again.
Ceiling speakers also are typically round. This gives further credence to their fashion consciousness and ability to look natural. You may not care, but I’m sure your wife or girlfriend does not want some ugly square box sticking out all over the place, here and there, causing the room’s “harmony” to break down. They almost look like something you would expect to see on an advanced spaceship; very cool.
So those are the main reasons, as I see it, that ceiling speakers bought at the right price are actually a great bargain nowadays. It is so great to see nerdy technology be used in such an artful way. And it is even greater to actually have the things installed, be sitting on your couch in the dark, watching an action packed move, and to just straight up be assaulted from every angle by the perfect and pristine sound that these things can generate.
