Every school in Taiwan that hires foreign English teachers has a completely different number of classes and hours they are able to offer their teachers. What this means is that one school might be able to offer you 30 hours a week and another only 14. There are a lot of factors that affect how many hours a school can offer its teachers. Some of these range from where the school is located to what kind of school it is. If you want to teach English in Taiwan then you need to know in advance the number of hours, at least in theory, that you ll be working. Nothing could be worse than applying to work for a school to only find out later that they aren t offering you enough hours to make your stay in Taiwan worthwhile.

The common workload teachers in Taiwan have is around 24 hours a week. Cram schools are the largest employers of foreign teachers and this is where 99 of English teachers in Taiwan work. They cater to parents who want to send their children to English classes to improve their English. Most classes in cram schools are held in the afternoons and evenings from around 4pm and finish around 9pm. Many are open five or six days a week and you can quickly see why the majority of teachers in Taiwan work around 24 hours a week. You might find a school offering only 20 hours and another 24, but this is the average workload for teachers. If you are coming to Taiwan to teach to save money then you will need to plan ahead to make sure you can get enough hours to make the kind of money you want.

If you want as many hours as possible then you would be best of looking for a job in a big city like Taipei where there is a much larger market for English teachers. You should also check with schools first as to what the maximum number of hours are that teachers can work at the school. Besides this you can also look for a second job if you are really wanting more hours. You can find a second job and work without any legal problems in Taiwan as long as your second job offers you are least 6 hours or more per week. This shouldn t be too hard as many schools have just a couple of classes a week they need teachers for and would be very happy if they could hire someone who was happy to work just those extra few hours.

You won t be working 40 hours a week in Taiwan unless you really want to. Schools typically have 20 24 hours of classes a week and the number of schools that can give their English teachers more than this are limited. The best way to get extra hours to make some more money is to look for a school that has a lot of hours or see if you can find a second job in the same area that you live.
