We’ve all heard the term “beauty sleep”. Often in those flicks where there’s a snobby rich girl she’ll ask not to be interrupted because she’s got to get her “beauty sleep”.

So, perhaps we’ve all grown up to think that it’s just a nonsense sort of thing for people who have nothing better to do but sleep because they believe it will enhance their beauty.

Not so.

Sleep is an important part of a beauty and skin care regimen! Remember how when you were younger and didn’t want to go to bed on time your parents would say that you only grow when you sleep? So if that’s the case, you ask, why are we not as tall as buildings by now? If you think about it, maybe our height is set to only grow a certain amount, but in fact we as living organisms never stop growing! We develop new skin and cells all the time. This is how our body keeps us “fresh” and “new”: out with the old, in with the new. The lovely skin care industry “R” words come in very handy here: Sleep is rejuvenating, replenishing, regenerating, and restoring.

Getting back to beauty and sleep, they pretty much go together. If we don’t get enough sleep, we can try all the creams and makeup we want, the problem will still remain at the root of the issue, and that regards our body’s health cycle with sleep. Sleep is when new cells are formed and things like collagen are being ‘tuned up’ to give you glowing, youthful skin. It’s also when restorative and regenerating work is being done on damaged skin; UV rays from too much sun, acne, eczema and rashes, razor cuts, bruises – they’re all damaged skin aren’t they? And your body heals them naturally, with the help of sleep (and of course, yes, many other scientific components with it).

So how much sleep is “beauty sleep”?

Well, it’s not always a nap in the afternoon like the rich snobby girl in the movies does it. It’s actually part of your normal sleep cycle, which your body does naturally. Mind you, if you need the extra rest in the afternoon, you’ll feel it, and by all means, it won’t hurt your beauty regimen!

However, getting good restful sleep daily is what is most important. Your body has a way of regulating itself so it knows when to be awake and when to sleep. It’s called our biological clock! But actually it is rules by hormones.

If you are a person who has trouble sleeping you will need to address this problem. It could be stress, which is bad for you in more ways than just affecting your beauty. It could be jet lag, which you should try to adjust to quickly. It could also be a number of things you’re not aware of because they happen when you’re asleep and don’t notice them, such as breathing heavily, or kicking your legs all night, or moving around too much. In cases where your fatigue is inexplicable and is affecting your functionality, see a doctor and they should get you on the right path to a healthy sleeping habit.

For those with less serious problems, melatonin is a natural supplement that can help a person go to sleep quicker. It’s not a medicated sleeping pill, it’s a supplement that aids your body in producing the right “sleep hormones” that it normally does.

Other good sleeping habits include: exercising (but not right before bed), taking hot baths, drinking chamomile tea before bed, taking a B Complex vitamin (for stress relief) and using lavender and other aroma therapy meant for stress reduction.

So the next time you say “good night” to one of your girlfriends, you know you’re wishing them a beautiful morning!
