As trends and choices in home décor change there is being a revolution in the use of windows. The changing needs are also fuelling this. Windows are being installed more and more to let in more light and make homes more insulated. Well lighted homes with good views are in focus these days. Also in demand is insulation. Insulation can save a lot on electricity bills and is good for the environment as less electricity consumption means less depletion of the earth’s resources and less pollution.

Just as the windows of the house can be changed to include the latest windows the same can be done with the basement as well. More and more house owners are opting to change the windows of their basements to make them well lighted. Your basement really does not need to be a neglected part of the house. It also makes sense to install in your basement windows that are more insulating as this way you can keep your basements warm.

Basement windows are popularly made from vinyl. Vinyl is made from PVC or polyvinyl chloride which is the same thing that is used in making drainage pipes or electrical insulators. There had been abjections raised at using vinyl windows by environmental activists as vinyl used to release a substance called dioxin which is harmful for the environment. However dioxin emissions now have been reduced by 70 per cent. Vinyl is a very good insulator and in this regards the best material to use. Vinyl traps pockets of air inside and thus makes the conduction of heat difficult.

There are some different types of basement windows. Some of them are Hopper Windows, Slider Windows, Window Bubble and Awning Windows. Hopper windows are the most basic type. They open by tilting inwards from the top as the hinges are placed at the bottom and the screen on the outside. Sliding windows as the name suggest open by sliding. They usually open horizontally. They are also called glider windows. They are more expensive than the hopper windows but less expensive than the awning windows. Window bubbles are dome shaped windows that can be fitted over small openings. They offer very good insulation and protection from animals, plant intrusions and dirt. Awning windows are the latest trend. They are very stylish windows and also expensive. Awning windows open from inside out and from the bottom. They need to be raised outwards from the bottom like the windows of a patio. They are hinged at the top. They offer good protection from the elements because of the way they open. The screen is on the inside. Awning windows are suitable for basements that have a lot of space for windows and also for basements that need to be well lighted.

So these are the different types of basement windows that you can consider while remodeling your basement. It really makes a good idea to have your basement well lightened and well insulated. Before choosing what you want take a look at the windows installed in the basement of your friends. Then start looking for a dealer. To find a good manufacturer or dealer you can look up the Better Business Bureau ratings and also take a look at the forums on the internet.
