To tweet or not to tweet. That is the question.

Twitter has taken the world by storm and is taking the internet marketing community to heights it never dreamed of reaching. Why? Because it’s short, sweet and to the point. There’s no demanding inbox to reply to, no long winded messages to read, just 140 characters to get your point across.

Summary: In today’s fast paced, real time, information driven world, Twitter offers a breath of fresh air from the often cluttered email inboxes of old and annoying pop up advertising approaches hated by all. We no longer want to spend time wading through content laden newsletters. We want up to the minute updates, status reports and tips. So what does this mean for your online business? How does it play a role in internet marketing?

It means you have the opportunity to take advantage of an exciting and most importantly, growing community of people who are not only a captive audience, but will appreciate brevity, something I am sure you will find refreshing when trying to manage your business and promote it at the same time! And the best part is, it’s free.

Once you have created your Twitter account, (which, by the way, couldn’t be easier) there are two keys to making Twitter work for you.

1. Be a follower. Now, I know as a business owner this can be a hard concept for you as you most likely consider yourself to be a “leader”. However, in Twitter language, you will want to be a follower in order to have others follow you. The more people and/or businesses you follow, the more they will follow you and hence, the more exposure you will gain. This has the potential to grow your customer list by leaps and bounds!

Since your tweets will have to be short, it will force you to say what you need to say without letting sales lingo get in the way. Put yourself out there and make it interesting so that others will want to follow you. However, do NOT use Twitter to let people know about your most recent sale or monthly offer. You will quickly turn people off and lose any ground you may have gained by creating a Twitter account in the first place. Remember, Twitter, just as with any social media marketing, is about building relationships and having conversations. It is not the place to “sell”.

2. Be relevant. Stay on top of your tweets. Send out no less than two tweets each day and in addition, respond to other tweets, regardless if they are directed at you or not. You will have to work at managing your Twitter account in order to see any results materialize from your efforts; however, it is a critical part to beginning and growing a successful social media campaign for your online business.

It really is that simple. If you tweet, you will be tweeted! Start the conversation and watch others catch on. You will be addicted before you can even say the word “tweet” and the best part is, you will watch your business grow.
