A big name on four little wheels, Andrew Reynolds has turned his great skateboarding skill into a money making enterprise.
Known as “the Boss” by fans and aficionados, Andrew Reynolds rides his skateboard through the air as though on a magic carpet; and flips, spins and tips his skateboard while skimming along walls, jumping fences and riding down metal handrails. His skills riding, what could be described as a giant roller skate or a mini surfboard with wheels, are second to none, certainly in the confident eyes of Andrew Reynolds who has grown to be a profitable name in skateboarding circles.
For the last few of his young years, Andrew Reynolds has enjoyed growing prosperity by attaching his world renowned name to such skateboarding brands as Emerica, Baker Skateboards and Birdhouse but is expecting to cash in with his own brand of clothing called Altamont.
Typical of many athletes, Andrew Reynolds smokes and drinks coffee before practising his money making trademark front side flip while listening to his favourite band, Goat. Altamont Clothing came out of a desire to rid the skateboarding fraternity of bad skateboarding clothes and now Andrew Reynolds is equipping his fans with the coolest skateboarding fashion items together with his business partner, Mark Foster.
Apart from a fashionable clothing range, Altamont also rolls out its own skateboarding team and boasts leading lights such as Sir Theotis Bearley, Bryan Herman, Sammy Baca, Kenny Hoyle, and Garret Hill. The team, a moving billboard for the Altamont clothing range, was selected by Sammy Baca, one of the very brightest of the rising skateboarding stars.
After almost two decades flying through the air and accumulating numerous awards at skateboarding championships, Andrew Reynolds has increased his level of fame by appearing in the Tony Hawk video games series. At over 6’2”, Andrew Reynolds cuts an imposing figure amongst his peers and is a role model for millions of young skateboarders who take up the sport simply to dress and perform like their hero.
Skateboarding has only been invented for about 30 years and yet the innovation when it comes to tricks is quite remarkable. Andrew Reynolds is one of the prime movers of the skateboarding trick called the Ollie which involves punching down the rear of the skateboard and then stamping on the nose to create lift off. Andrew Reynolds is a master at using the Ollie to jump over fences or to leap onto walls and skateboard along the top.
It is dramatic and difficult stunts like the Ollie that have added to Andrew Reynolds’ reputation which in turn is reflected in the level of merchandise that is sold on the back of his name and skills.
Today, a true legend of street surfing, Andrew Reynolds is also known for his signature stunt called the front side flip. It is tricks such as the front side flip that helped to sell millions of DVDs such as Emerica’s ‘This is Skateboarding’. In ‘Baker 2G’, Andrew Reynolds is seen leaping over Hollywood High School’s 16 step handrail and in ‘Baker 3’ Reynolds leaps 17 steps in the sequence known as the ‘Wallenberg Set’.
Making money from skateboarding is easy at the level that Andrew Reynolds skates and it enables him to collect precious items such as jewellery. One of the main engines for his considerable skills at making money from skateboarding is the fact that he rides his own skateboards. At the turn of the century, Andrew Reynolds teamed up with Jay Strickland to create and manufacture Baker Skateboards. The company sells the boards and the wheels and is complemented by Deathwish Skateboards, a company that is also owned by Andrew Reynolds.
There is a time when bones are supple and weight to strength ratio is such that boys, and it is mostly boys, want to show off their skills to each other and to admiring girlfriends. The popularity of skateboarding has shown that it is not just a phase and that with each new generation there is a whole new market looking to emulate Andrew Reynolds by purchasing his brands such as clothing, protective headwear and the amazing skateboards themselves.
Andrew Reynolds has shown that underneath his maverick exterior is a shrewd mind that relishes making money for his family through the establishment of the Altamont clothing brand and the on going success of the skateboard manufacturing companies, Baker and Deathwish.
Skateboarding since he was a kid in single figures, Andrew Reynolds is an award winning name that continually proves hat skateboarding is an enduring money making sport. Whether Reynolds’ uncle really is the 1970s’ film star Burt Reynolds is open to question but, for many, it is Andrew Reynolds who is the true star of the Hollywood Walk of Fame since being filmed leaping a long flight of steps at Hollywood High School.
