Defensive driving techniques can go a long way in reducing the number of accidents that happen each year. Everybody should learn these techniques to avoid such accidents from happening in the first place and being alert while you drive is the first and most important of these techniques.
Do not let a cell phone distract you from driving at any time as cell phones are proven to be among the most distracting elements while you are driving your car. The effect of attending a call can be so devastating that in some States, the use of a cell phone while one is driving is illegal. What talking on the cell phone does is it divides your attention; therefore your reaction time may not be enough to avoid accidents that could happen in an instant. Driving with one hand is not the best way to control your car either by the way. The chance of accident increases the most when the driver who is talking on the cell phone is suddenly faced with an unexpected obstacle in the form of a impulsively driven car or a passing pedestrian or anything else that might happen by surprise. Other distractions include over talkative passengers, music systems and radios.
Not all roads are good roads to drive on and even good roads can have debris lying on it for sometime so it is wise to be careful about what is lying on the road to drive safely. The size of the debris and the speed of your car will determine the damage it can do, while a small debris can make your tire skid and let your car go out of your control, larger debris have been found to topple the entire car. Such an accident can be minor, but it can also be fatal for everybody inside the car.
From squirrels to deer, it is not uncommon for a wild animal to freeze in front of your car when crossing the road thus causing both injuries to the animal and posing a threat to the lives of the passengers inside the car. Be alert once again to avoid such accidents. Not only animals, but pedestrians also will pose a threat if you are not careful as they are often found walking or jogging on the sides of the roads. Sometimes you will just not be able to avoid such collisions, but you will avoid most and manage to reduce the damage even when you hit, if you are alert while you face such a situation.
The whole business of being alert sounds too easy, but is it really? You probably have a sound system inside your car and you travel with kids probably who can be pretty loud at times and what about the all important phone calls that you must take while you drive? It is hard to be alert at all times in our lives, but do be alert as far as possible to avoid tragedies that can never be reversed.
