Small, almost miniature bathrooms seem to be abound both in older homes and as second bathrooms in new homes as well. While these rooms may be completely functional, they can often lack the charm and in fact, can detract from the style of the rest of your home. What is even worse, is that they are simply not a comfortable place to be, often making one feel as though they are in a cave while showering or preparing for the day.

While you may not be able to change the size of your bathroom, you can change the furniture to create more space and develop a more comfortable look and feel to that diinutive area of your home.

Minimise the Size of Your Furniture

Eliminating the tub and going with a shower will make your bathroom look considerably larger. Choosing a shower with a sliding door with towel hangers on the outside can provide an elegant look and give the room a more open space than a conventional shower with a curtain. A glass shower can add additional airiness and a provide more modern look even to a previously out of date bathroom.

Compact toilets are another way to save space. While large enough to use comfortably many of these compact toilets have lower back tanks that makes those over the toilet shelving areas even more useful. There are even models where the tank fits into the wall, allowing you to move the stool further back and save floor space.

Choosing space saving sinks is also important when furnishing a small bathroom. Wall mounted sinks don t offer anything in the way of storage, but they do free up floor space giving your room a more open look and feel. For those of you who need storage space a new vessel sink design may be the right choice. These sinks come in different sizes and choosing one with open shelves will keep your room looking spacious while accommodating those towels and other things you need to store.

Plan Your Bathroom Before Purchasing Any Furniture

The best thing you can do before purchasing any new piece of bathroom furniture is plan out your bathroom in advance. Draw out the room to exact scale and then armed with the dimensions of your sink, shower and toilet place outlines of them in your room to see if these particular pieces of furniture gives your room the look and feel that you are looking for. Planning in advance takes a little time but will save you from years of having to live with something that looked good in the store or online but is less than adequate for your particular needs.

Once you have chosen the furniture that will make your bathroom more spacious, then you can choose the colors and accessories that will give your room the look and feel you are searching for. Investing a little time now will be rewarded later, when you find yourself wanting to linger in the comfortable charming room you have created.
