Many people seem to think that weddings during the winter months are too bleak to hold. Those folks don't think about the joy of Christmas weddings with the Christmas party favors tied up like little present (well, really, that is what they are!). You might even consider avoiding the silly season and instead wait for the majestic beauty of winter in all her glory. In winter the first thing you need to decide is if you want a Christmas wedding or a true heart of winter wedding. Many people are hesitant about Christmas weddings but they really shouldn't be. It really has some great advantages. Now keep in mind that red is going to be a big color in your wedding. Don't worry, though, it is because of the poinsettias. Your church and reception hall will already be decorated with them. That is really one of the real advantages of the Christmas weddings, half your decorating is already done for free. If you stick to adding white, gold and/or silver it will end up well balanced. Lots of glass looks good too, especially if you use just the silver. White lights in ficus trees in the reception hall (if there are any) look great as would a Christmas tree with small silver ribbons and glass snowflake ornaments. Most people would agree that you should stay away from Santa clause sorts of things but the rest is pretty fair game. It already is the holiday season so the reception should resemble a romantic Christmas party.
Things are a little different with the dead of winter sort of wedding. After Christmas is good because that is generally the slow time of year for facilities and restaurants so booking is easier and a lot of times great deals can be reached. Winter weddings tend to be the most formal of all the seasons. With the cold weather outside the wedding party (the male portion) does not mind the tuxedo at all. It's also great for night weddings because it gets so dark so early that you really feel the romantic impact of the ceremony. As for your colors for the wedding you have a few choices.
Traditionally, rich, dark colors are used a lot as accents to the white in all weddings. Royal purple makes a great color for table clothes at the reception look great when well balanced with a lot of white on top of the table, maybe white linen, white floating candles with white fluff around the base of the bowl. The effect would be powerful. A large round beveled mirror instead of the white fuff would look great if the candles glowed through. It would give the table depth and in a darker hall would almost look like stars floating in the middle of the table. Silver wedding favors would also reflect the light as well.
