In my previous article, I talked about the difference between an Italian and a Zinfandel wines. They are both being used for the 2 wine products from “VIVI” which are the Falanghina and the Primitivo wines. This time, let’s talk about the 2 VIVI wines. What they are made of and what makes them different from each other. I will discuss as well a little bit of history about Falanghina and the Primitivo wines. Looking at the 2 wines, you can already tell the difference. Falanghina is a white wine, while Primitivo is the red wine. But other than that, what makes it have different colors even though they are both made in grapes?
Let’s discuss first the Falanghina wine. “Falanghina” is a direct derivative of the Latin noun “falangae” which refers to the stakes used to support growing vines. “Falanghina is used to make fresh and lively white wines that draw comparisons to Pinot Grigio. Aromas and flavors of green apples and citrus fruits are common.” Its history goes back to 7th century B.C where it is believed that Falanghina vines were first brought to Italy by Greek settlers of the Campi Flegrei region north of Naples.
Primitivo wine however, is known for producing hardy and full wines that are heavy with flavor and alcohol and sometimes sugar from the raisin character of the grapes, the term “primitivo” is derived from “primativus” or “primaticcio,” two words which refer to the early-ripening characteristic of the grape. It is believed that Primitivo grapes originated in Caucasus in Eurasia around 6,000 B.C and was transplanted to the Mediterranean in the 18th century. Primitivo wines were compared to Zinfandel wines (wines that were made in the US) when it was introduced in California in the mid-1960s.
So if you’re the type who likes white wine, then try the fresh, clean interpretation of one of Italy’s most appreciated “VIVI Falanghina”. But if you prefer the famous red wine of Italy, then you should experience the taste of impeccable breeding of “VIVI Primitivo”.
