A job in Japan can be a very exciting proposition. It is a unique country with a rich culture. Experiencing such culture is something many people look forward to. Unfortunately, the differences in culture can be so significant that it becomes an unexpected and serious problem. This is known as culture shock.

Culture shock is a fish out of water scenario. Someone feels anxiety, fear, worry, or even depression due to being in unfamiliar territory. When the cultures, customs, and attitudes are different than what you are used to, navigating through such a situation can be extremely difficult. Such is the case many people experience when they travel to Japan to accept a new job.

The reason it's called culture "shock" is because people are taken completely aback by the severity of the differences. Actually, there are many ways to reverse the negative problems of culture shock in Japan and become acclimatised with the culture. It all starts with a little knowledge.

The best way to avoid culture shock is by learning as much about the culture as possible prior to venturing into the new country. It is also necessary to learn what will be expected of you when you are in the office. The way things are done in New York or London will be different to how things are done in Tokyo or Osaka. Understanding the basics of Japanese corporate culture prior to venturing into such a job can eliminate much of the initial culture shock. If you understand how the culture in Japan operates, you will not run into the cultural catastrophe that others may have to contend with.

It is vital to take things slowly when you enter into the new work environment. This is good advice for someone getting a job in their own country - it is of paramount importance for those procuring a job in a foreign country. Take things slowly and work your way into the office in a progressive manner. Most of all, avoid making waves, since this will exacerbate any problems that might be presented.

Seeking the advice of those who have traveled the road before you would be a smart move. Those with experience dealing with culture shock can provide tips and advice on how to deal with the problem. Heed whatever good advice they provide, and most of all, stay positive. While it may be difficult in the beginning, it will certainly turn out to be an incredible experience.
