Why do we remember stereotypes? Scientists have spent years of research and millions of dollars asking this question. The conclusion they've come to is not particularly exciting. We remember stereotypes of people, countries, and so on for the same reason that we remember seasons of the year, holidays, and big upcoming events. We remember them because everyone else does. It might feel a bit cheap, but you can use this very common human trait to get your website out there. In effect, you can turn world events into a giant engine to superpower your SEO.
So how can you piggyback on what's happening? During the lead-up to the holiday season, Amazon.com adds phrases like "Christmas gifts," "last-minute Christmas gifts" and "gift cards" to their meta information. Recently as the Copenhagen Climate Change Convention approached, major sites from news, to e-commerce, to even religious organizations ran stories about climate change, added meta tags about global warming, and advertised books, t-shirts, and other items that related to the conference. They got clicks because people were interested in these subjects, so they were already predisposed to checking out what was going on.
So here's how you can tap into what's already going on and piggyback onto the big news of the day:
1.) Keep a calendar handy. And don't just fixate on U.S. holidays. In countries like Great Britain, Canada, and New Zealand, Boxing Day (December 26) is the biggest shopping day of the year. Learn which days are important to which countries and have special events and promotions specifically for them. You'll create good will while you get more clicks.
2.) Spend some time daily reading the news of the world, political blogs, and so forth. The more you know about upcoming events in politics and world events, the quicker you can adapt to changing trends.
3.) Look for ways to take advantage of the things that get people to open their wallets. For example, in the U.S., the Super Bowl is when companies pull out all the stops to advertise their latest and greatest items. Why is this? Because the Super Bowl is a happy time and it puts people in a spendy mood. Other countries have the World Cup, the end of Ramadan, and other landmark festivities. There's a lot more to human happiness than Christmas and Valentine's Day.
4.) Keep track of the latest products. For example, a lot of websites right now are advertising tips and tricks for optimizing the Windows 7 and learning Android for mobile phones. With all the fanfare over Google's Nexus One and Microsoft's Windows 7, they can expect eager attention.
So piggyback shamelessly onto world events! It's easy to do, and your demographic is already there waiting for you. All you have to do is reach them.
