When it comes to smoking, it is becoming less and less socially acceptable. It is being taken out of public places such as restaurants and bars, and almost every other public place out there. This is all part of an effort to keep second hand smoke to a minimum. As a smoker, you are probably considering quitting altogether. You are tired of the bad smell that your friends tell you surround you from smoking too much, and you are worried that your habit will have serious health consequences. You want to be healthier, and you know that quitting smoking is a positive first step.

However, it is not as easy as commercials for patches and nicotine gum make it out to be. These products have very little success rate if one key factor is missing: determination. If you lack the constitution and the will power to quit smoking, then the odds of you successfully quitting are almost at zero. Sure, there are some smokers who kept with their patches and gums long enough to not crave cigarettes, but craving and wanting are two different things.

To crave means that it is a compulsion. Not only do you want the cigarette, but your body is convinced that it needs it. That is the nature of addiction. But to want a cigarette can come from any number of things, usually boredom. It is a common practice among smokers who are trying to quit smoking to take the time that they normally allocate to smoking to do something else. For example, instead of lighting up, doing a puzzle, or taking time to finish some other menial task is a good way to get your mind off of the craving or the boredom. But once again, it all boils down to will power. You have to legitimately want to quit smoking.

Another thing that helps many smokers who are trying to quit is to create an incentive, such as rewarding oneself for going periods of time without cigarettes, increasing the reward the longer one goes without a cigarette. Others use their family and their health as further motivation. Often the smoker is more motivated to change through the realization that their own life may very well be at stake. It also helps many to have a friend that can hold them accountable for their actions, to help keep them away from cigarettes. But you must remember that you must take those first steps towards quitting yourself.
