The first thing you need to do is tell yourself that you no longer smoke. Even if you have smoked within the last hour, you need to tell yourself that you no longer smoke. This is one of the first steps of getting out of the mentality of the smoker. In some ways, this is the most important step to take because breaking that mentality is what often stands between being successful in quitting. Another thing that you need to keep in mind to do is to have a friend or family member that you can talk to whenever you find it difficult to resist the urge to smoke. This person can help lighten the burden, especially during times of stress for you.
It is also important for you to let any friends or family members of yours that smoke know that you are trying to quit smoking, and politely ask them if they could not smoke around you, as it will make your cravings stronger and that is something you definitely do not need to be around. However, you will have to eventually train yourself to be able to be around smokers because it is not something you will be able to constantly avoid.
You should also be sure to get rid of all of your smoking items. This helps to further remove any temptations you may have that will make you want to smoke. Also, if you just go ahead and get rid of them, any remaining cigarettes in your pack will be gone, and you will not be tempted to smoke one last cigarette, as many people who try to quit end up smoking again, telling themselves that they will just have one last cigarette.
