When people are young, they don?t think too much about how their bodies may one day deteriorate and things that they take for granted, like hearing, may even completely disappear. When things don?t work properly, as in the case of the ears, then a person will likely get hearing loss. It is therefore appropriate to dig deeper on the issues of what causes hearing loss in the first place.

Being deaf and not being able to hear, whether from birth or not is considered hearing loss. The definition of hearing loss also blankets hearing difficulties no matter how serious or not serious it may be. There are many causes as to why the loss of hearing happens to a person and some are common while some are not at all.

Birth defects are getting more common everyday and hearing loss birth defects is not at all uncommon. Babies who are born with underdeveloped or even deformed ear parts fall into this category. The best way to know how bad it is, is to go see a doctor specializing in loss of hearing.

Hearing loss can also be blamed on a person?s genetic makeup or body programming. The hearing loss gene, so to speak, can be passed down from parents to their children and grandchildren and so on regardless of whether the gene is dominant or not. The problem can range from mild hearing loss only to complete deafness.

Hearing loss can be easily caused by a person contracting some form of illness that affects the auditory senses. Mumps, HIV and autoimmune diseases can have an adverse affect on hearing. However, while some illness can induce permanent hearing impairment and deafness, most do not and are only temporary.

Aside from illnesses, medicines can also cause a person to suffer from hearing loss. Some medicines adversely affect the hearing functions of a person temporarily or permanently. Medication such as the common headache reliever aspirin, are linked and been accused of causing loss of hearing in people.

Whether you paid attention in your chemistry class or not, chemicals can be a good thing and be a bad thing at the same time, as some chemicals promote hearing loss. Ototoxic chemicals mean these chemicals somehow can wound and even destroy parts of a person?s ear. Drugs or medication can sometimes be ototoxic chemicals, while solvents, pesticides and even some metals such as lead fall into this category.

Lastly, a person who experiences trauma can also experience hearing loss. A common example of a physical trauma is a head injury a person may have faced in the past that could have damaged parts of the ear. While the effects are not felt immediately, environmental noise like construction works can lead to hearing impairment too.

The above are the most common causes of the disorder of hearing loss. By understanding what causes hearing loss, you now have the knowledge as to what to avoid in order to protect your hearing. Prevention is the best medicine after all.
