People don't ever think that they will ever lose their sense of hearing. This could not be further from the truth, as not just adults, but also even children can be victims of hearing impairment. The number one priority then is to educate people what causes hearing loss and how it can treated once you have it.

Aside from other abnormalities, babies are more at risk of getting hearing loss than anything else. Losing the sense of hearing is not fixed on only adults and senior citizens, but young people as well. Some of the other causes are trauma, noise pollution and being sick with another disease.

A very common cause of hearing loss is when a person is surrounded all the time by very loud environmental noise. Airports, concerts, crowds or anything else for that matter can lead people to lose their sense of hearing. Things like the use of guns, tools that emit very loud noises even if just for a burst of time are dangerous too.

Hearing impairment, depending on the form, can often times be treated with the use of hearing aids. There are a ton of different kinds of hearing aids used to treat problems with hearing and each of these have their own pros and cons. Hearing aids in general are simply amplifiers of sound to the person wearing it.

The easiest way to determine the type of the hearing aid is by examining where it is worn by the user. Hearing aids worn behind the ear are called BTE and these are made up of a case, a tube and ear molds. With the BTE, only the ear mold is placed inside the ear thus there is less risk of moisture and earwax damage to the whole device.

A person can go for what is called a bionic ear which is basically an implant that replaces your cochlea. The device is implanted behind the ear of the person, under the scalp area. The cochlear implant works by picking up sounds and speech, then converting these into tiny electronic impulses that are sent through electrodes to nerves that are connected to our brains, which our brain can distinguish as sound.

A cochlear implant is made up of a microphone, speech processor, transmitter, receiver, stimulator and many tiny electrodes. The whole procedure and the device itself are all very expensive and is out of the reach of ordinary citizens. Aside from the huge price tag, a person's hearing history, health, and other minor things are checked to see if the implants will have a high chance of success.

Patient's may one day look forward to having natural replacements called gene therapy as their form of hearing treatment. Gene therapy is a solution where new cochlea cells are grown specifically for patients. Sadly, gene therapy is still a long way from being prescribed by doctors.

No one can say for sure when they will lose their sense of hearing, but the hearing treatments provided are a gist of what can be done in light of it. A doctor is the only one who can know for certain what hearing treatment should be used. No time is better than today to start taking care of your hearing.
