The world is becoming a little bit more materialistic, concerned with possessions and worried about style over content, which is a worrying state of affairs. Yes it is nice to have some nice objects but if your style has no substance then the chances are that at some stage you will fall flat and fail.
You do see it in every aspect of life though. When people look at purchasing a new car, they are more concerned about the flash extras and accessories that come with the car like the satellite navigation system or the quality, size and make of the alloy wheels rather than the more important and crucial aspects like whether or not a car has roof bars.
If you think about it roof bars are probably the last things that most people would look at when considering what car to purchase and yet for some people it may be a key and important feature. Roof bars allows people to load bicycles onto the roof of the car and also to place additional storage onto the top of the car through the assistance of roof boxes. To some families who perform a lot of travelling having roof bars on a car can be as important as having a tow bar attached to the back.
The fact of the matter is that the world is not likely to go back to the days when it wasn't all about style. If you browse the pages of any of the magazines or newspapers that adorn the shelves in the newsagents or newsstands then you will see that they are filled to the brim with pictures of celebrities looking thin, tanned, toned and like they have just stepped out of a fashion studio. This then sends out the message to everyone that we are supposed to look like that.
I'm not sure if we all have 2 hours a day to prune ourselves to perfection before we step out of the house to head to work, nor should we need to. It is always interesting to see these people who have bought flash cars like Mazda MX-5's desperately trying to squeeze the smallest suitcase into the boot that probably only contains a few pairs of pants and socks at most, while I benefit from additional boot space in my 1.2L Peugeot 206. Maybe in these credit crunch times we should all start considering content over style a bit more. Make sure your next car has roof bars, or when it comes your next holiday and you have no room you might be sorry.
