There are many forms of toddler discipline. You may opt to use one form then another or you can use a combination of these methods. Perhaps, the vital thing here is that you choose based on what it does to your toddler. In choosing the right form of discipline it is not just critical that you achieve what you aim -- that is that your youngster obeys you -- but it is also valuable to know the lasting effects of the kind of discipline you impart to your kid.
Scolding. Reprimanding a child as a way of disciplining kids is effective in making them recognize their fault. However if you will constantly just raise your voice without telling your kid why is not as helpful as otherwise. You will only lower his self-esteem. He will tend to follow you but will not understand what’s wrong and why. Hence, when reprimanding your children you should take the extra effort of explaining why it is wrong. That way you are helping him understand and identify which is right from wrong.
Spanking. Spanking and any other forms of physical punishment are now being frowned upon by many cultures. Spanking is currently viewed as an old-fashioned way of disciplining kids. Previously, parents would have sticks they used to hit their children when they are misbehaving. At present, spanking is highly disregarded as a form of disciplining kids because it entails negative impact on the toddler. Hitting your toddler to discipline him will mar his self-esteem and will only engender fear or trauma. It also becomes less helpful if you will only hit your youngster and do not explain why you hit him. He will not be able to relate the punishment with his wrong acts, and therefore would only think that you hit him for no or vague reasons.
Time outs - Time out is the most preferred form of discipline nowadays since it does not involve physical punishment or raising ones voice. It lets the kid reflect on his mistakes during a time out. When a youngster does a blunder, you call his attention firmly and send him to a "naughty chair" (or tell him to stand in a corner) for couple of minutes. His area must be free from any distractions so that the toddler can think deeply and realize of his mistakes within that span of time. This form of discipline is preferred by most parents since it allows parents to keep their feelings of anger away from the youngster.
In disciplining children it is critical that you choose carefully the form of discipline you will apply to your toddler. Choose which you think will be most helpful on your toddler in bringing out the best in him.
