Sometimes we complain about Christmas starting earlier every year. However it pales into insignificance when you think that the process has already begun in producing the new 2011 calendars. Yes barely has one year got under way than we're already thinking about the next.

In fact some people are already looking beyond that. The business is fast moving and ever changing - an odd fact considering all it does it count the days of the year, but never mind. However that's where the creativity lies. When dealing with something that is by its very nature repetitive you have to be able to look beyond the normal realms to keep it fresh and appealing.

One example comes from Tokyo and a rare trade fair for the country's graphic designers. For many years as the economy thrived life was good. Work came to them and they never had to learn the skills of selling themselves. All of that means the recession has hit them hard and they're experiencing some decidedly tough times. To solve the problem the Japan Graphic Design Association (JAGDA) has invited designers to submit their proposals for 2011 calendars. The location is what's been labelled JAGDA Calendar Stone and almost a hundred designers have eagerly taken up the challenge.

The results have been imaginative and inspiring - far removed from the relatively drab affair we normally get. Among the more striking designs is one that uses a different kitsch style mug for every day of the year. Another has a calendar made entirely out of braile.

The competing designers will be able to shop their ideas directly to business owners and advertisers. It's an ideal chance for people working in what has become a savagely cut throat industry to get their work seen by the people who matter. The idea is to use the relatively simple notion of 2011 calendars to generate a a recovery in this niche sector of the economy. By acting as a go-between connecting buyer and artist.

So if you fancy your chances at producing 2011 calendars, now is the time to get your thinking cap on. You might be an established illustrator or an up and coming designer. Whatever your situation you can get in contact with all sorts of companies with your ideas. They're all waiting for the next idea - something that can really stand out from the crowd - so why should it not be yours?
