Treating eating disorders have been a challenge. It is a challenge because it involves input and dedication from so many individuals for one individual to defeat the condition. As described in his book, Hope, help and healing for eating disorders, Dr. George Jantz say that a whole-person approach is a requisite for treatment. He further explains that the approach should impact every aspect of an individual from emotional, intellectual, physical, relational and of course, spiritual.
For some people, one or two of the above aspects are enough to bring them back to normal again. But in tough cases an integrative approach is necessary. The emotional feelings of someone refer to natural feelings that the person may feel towards his/her self and towards others. When someone suffering from eating disorders, it is quite known that the emotional self of that individual is also hit. That is why cognitive emotive therapy or similar approaches should be used in treatment for eating disorders.
Emotional self is the attention seeker, but within each one of us, there also lies an intellectual self that awaits challenges and stimulation to grow and fight back. It is significant to touch upon the intellectual self while undergoing treatment for eating disorders because you will need to house clean some of your own notions and behavioral patterns which will need intentional backing up. Therefore through whole individual recovery approach, Dr. Jantz expects individual's emotional self and the intellectual self to work hand in hand, to open them to a dimension that is not dependant on eating disorders.
The physical self gets ruptured and hampered by many things as a result of what our emotional self and intellectual self goes through. So having touched upon the most significant components, the next approach is to dig deep in to the physical self to adapt to new behavior. The mind is a master and the body is a humble servant. So changing physical behavior following mental exercises is no big deal, really!
The relational self is also needs to be treated for eating disorders as the eating disorder may have its beginnings in problamatic relationships as well. Therefore, while you are on treatment for eating disorders, it is only fair that we take a look at your relational self and the bonds you share with others.
The spiritual self is equally fundamental because it is where hope occupies. So treatment for eating disorders will most include this portion to see how you could be of help and hope to yourself.
