Is your PC running very slow? If so, then I’m glad you’ve found this article, because I’m going to be providing you with some really handy practical tips you can do to improve the speed of your PC. I’m going to talk about the number of programs you’re running, your page file size, hard disk fragmentation, and also registry errors.

How Many Programs Are Running?

As you install an increasing number of programs onto your PC, a lot of them end up running in the background. A handy way to check this is to look at the icons in the lower right corner in the taskbar. You may have to click the tiny arrow to see them all. If there are many little icons here, then that means that there are many programs running in the background. It’s well worth investigating whether you need all those programs running all the time.

One way you can disable specific programs from loading at startup is to run the MSCONFIG program. To run this, in Windows XP click Start, Run, then type in “msconfig”. For Windows Vista or Windows 7, Click the Windows button and then type “msconfig” into the search.

In MSCONFIG, click the Startup tab, and uncheck any programs that you know you definitely don’t want to run at startup. Be careful though. Don’t disable any programs you’re unsure about.

The Page File

Windows uses what’s called a page file as an extension to the RAM memory installed in your computer. The page file is stored on the hard disk, and by default, Windows chooses the size of the page file automatically, increasing it in size as needed. However, if the computer tends to utilize a great deal of memory, then the page file may get used rather a lot and constantly change size, which can eventually cause it to be fragmented.

One thing you are able to do to combat this is to increase the minimum size of the page file. To do this, click Start, right click on My PC (labelled Computer in Vista and Windows 7), then click Advanced System Settings (Vista and Windows 7 only), then click the Advanced tab, click Settings on the Performance section, then click the Advanced tab, then click Change on the Virtual Memory section. You should then increase the page file size to twice the default amount.

Defrag The Hard Drive

Another thing you can do to speed up your Computer is to defragment the hard disk. To do this, right click the hard disk and go to Properties, Tools, and Defragment Now.
