In this economy, one of the most important things that you can do to curb your spending is learning how to save money on food. Food is something that we all have to have to survive; we have to eat whether we like it or not, so learning how to save money on something that is an absolute necessity is extremely important to financial security and independence.
If you're looking to lower your grocery bill, there are a lot of things that you can do to accomplish this. One of the first things that you can do is eat more of these three things: rice, noodles, and potatoes. All 3 of these foods are cheap, filling, and can stretch an otherwise expensive meal out to where you can feed twice the amount of people for close to the same amount of money.
Something else to look at is meat prices. Find the best place in your area to buy meat and stick with it. Meat is one of the most competitive types of food that grocery stores sell; there will be different prices in almost every store for every different type. Don't overlook this simple, but effective way to save money on food.
The next thing that you can do is learn to make the most of your leftovers. If you have plenty of food leftover from the night before, don't hesitate to put it in a zip top bag and stick it in the freezer. Better yet, eat it for lunch or even dinner the day after you initially prepared it. Leftovers often taste better the day after, anyway, because the flavors have time to mingle with each other.
Don't fix meals that you know half of your family won't eat either because it's spicy or for other reasons. If you like certain meals that the rest of your family doesn't like, fix only enough for you and those who enjoy it. This helps further guard against waste.
Finally, do your best to prevent vegetables and fruits that you buy from going bad. If the two bell peppers that you bought look like they're about to start rotting before you get to use them, slice them up and put them in the freezer in a bag. They may not have the same texture after you freeze them, but if you're using them in a cooked dish, they're going to be limp, anyway, so it doesn't matter.
