Let's face it; going to college is expensive enough already without a lot of other expenses that go along with just living. So, to help lower your cost of living, here is a list of several things that you can do while you're in college to save you money.

Understand that even if your bank account has insufficient funds, your debit card can still cause you to become overdrawn and the bad thing is, you'll never know it until you actually go and check how much is in your account. But, you'll still be charged the overdraft fees... every single time your card was used after the account was over drafted.

If you have change leftover after making a purchase with cash, don't spend it; put it in a savings jar. Make sure you count and roll the change in coin roller yourself, though, since machines that do it for you can charge you anywhere from 5% to 10% just for doing this simple task.

There are three things that can help you stretch a meal much further than you initially thought possible: rice, noodles, and potatoes. Stock several kinds of noodles and buy a large bag of rice; unfortunately, potatoes will go bad long before noodles or rice will, but can have their shelflife extended if you store them properly in a dark place AWAY from onions. Take note: storing onions and potatoes in the same place will cause both to rot.

One of the most important things that you can do is avoid late fees on your bills at all costs. The fees add up a lot quicker than you think and it can cost you a fortune to be late.

If you have to have a computer, getting a laptop might be the best solution, especially if you're on the move. They use less power than desktops (so your electricity cost will be cheaper if utilities aren't included in your dorm) and they're obviously portable, so you don't have to have a desktop in more than one location. Don't get a super laptop if all you do is surf the net to do research papers and check e-mail.

Finally, when you buy a new laptop or desktop, forgo the extended warranties because your computer is under warranty for at least the first year, anyway, by default. Sales reps are trained to push the extended warranty on you as if it's worth it, when most of the time, it isn't.
