One of the biggest causes of damage to homes in the United States and around the world is the one thing that we all need to survive, even more than food: water. Water damage is a problem everywhere and it can cause thousands of dollars worth of property damage every year without even trying hard and the bad thing is, you may not even realize it's there until it's too late.
While water can cause wood to rot and fall apart, the most harmful thing that it causes is mold. Mold can not only eat the wood that it grows on, but it is also extremely unhealthy for you and your family to be around on a daily basis. There are a few places in your home where mold is found the most often and there are things that you can do to fix it before it becomes a big problem (and expense).
The bathroom is the number one place in the home to find mold growing and in most cases, it's found on the upper walls and ceiling, especially if there is no way for steam to escape the room while people are bathing. The easiest way to fix this is to have a bathroom exhaust fan installed; fortunately, this is not very expensive. You can spend a couple hundred bucks and install the fan in order to save you potentially thousands of dollars down the road. When the ceiling absorbs the steam from showers and baths, it can not only cause mold to grow, but also cause the drywall to buckle, weaken, and eventually collapse.
Another good place to put a vent is in the kitchen over the stove. If you don't already have one, you should get one for this area of your home, as well, since it is susceptible to the same dangers as the bathroom.
Waterproofing your kitchen and bathroom floors is also a good idea. If your vinyl flooring develops cracks in it, the cracks need to be sealed as soon as possible to prevent water from getting down to the wood floor underneath. This can cause your flooring to rot over time and lead to expensive repairs and possibly injuries, since floors often collapse while someone is walking across it.
Another big tip is to never, ever have carpet in your kitchen or bathroom. This is one of the worst mistakes that you can make as a homeowner, even if you do like the feel of carpet under your feet after you take a bath. The carpet soaks up more water and takes a longer time to dry out than a rug does, which causes mold to grow. If the floor isn't waterproofed underneath, you'll also have a rotting floor in no time. Skip the carpet and get a few decent quality rugs for the bathroom instead. You'll be glad you did.
