If you're thinking about quitting smoking, then you should know that quitting isn't as hard as some people make it out to be. For some people, it's incredibly easy to be smoking one day and then quitting cold turkey the next. For others, quitting is more difficult, often taking weeks or even months to overcome the habit completely. There are a few things that you should know about the smoking habit itself before attempting to quit.

The first thing is that nicotine is not the sole source of addiction here. Nicotine is what gets you “hooked” on cigarettes, but it isn't what keeps you hooked once you've been doing it a long time. Smokers often make smoking a part of who they are; they don't go anywhere without their cigarettes and their lighter, even if they're going somewhere that they know they won't be able to smoke. It becomes almost like an extension of themselves, like an extra limb. Breaking this habit is one of the keys to quitting that the “quit smoking gurus” don't ever tell anyone about. Nicotine withdrawal symptoms can last varying amounts of time depending on the person and how much they are used to having in their system, but the worst of the withdrawal symptoms is over in 2 days. If you can make it past the first two weeks without smoking, you stand a very good chance of succeeding, as long as you stick to your guns.

You can reduce the severity of nicotine cravings by choosing to quit smoking gradually; how gradually is up to you. You could phase cigarettes out over the course of a week or a month or even longer. It's up to you. Some people quit smoking gradually by limiting the number of cigarettes they can have in a day; others quit by making rules about where they can and can't smoke.

Quitting doesn't have to be a long, strenuous process; it really is as difficult as you make it. Whether you quit “cold turkey” or by limiting the number of cigarettes you're allowed to have or by quitting in certain areas of your home or even at work, smoking is something that can be overcome if you have the self control to enforce your own rules upon yourself. No one can make the decision to quit for you; it's something that most of the time, you have to do on your own.
