Do your homework prior to accepting a job assignment. Take a peek around forums dedicated to writers and check out if there are complaints about response times or payments from that specific client. Your freelance writing career can't afford to take a hit such as a website simply "disappearing" once your work have been submitted.
2. Bidding on "blind ads" is risky. It is not the most pleasant thing to do, but it is worth it to be suspicious. Why are they hiding their company's info, if indeed they are legitimate?
3. Don't ever believe that a writing freelance career means you are stuck to writing only articles or novels. Of course, these are popular avenues for your writing freelance career, but there are SO many more ways you can earn money with your writing! Poetry, blogging, editing, story writing,... and others!
4. Be selective in your job bids, instead of thinking that writing just ANYTHING will be helpful for your writing freelance career. Beginners tend to believe this. What IS true, however, is that you can really do some damage to your reputation as a writer if you submit shoddy work caused by your lack of familiarity about the particular subject. Bad evaluations can remain a long time! Try to mostly stick to subjects with which you are very familiar, and submit really good pieces.
Like anything worth working for, it help if you are intentional in the steps you take to build your writing freelance career. Follow the suggestions above, and start writing! Your wonderful and potentially lucrative job is waiting for you! If you know just how to find those well-paid writing ads, you will likely do more than just ok. Unfortunately, the majority of what "beginners" find when browsing for online writing jobs is so low-paid that it often does not seem worth the effort. Do not give up. Just get SMART!
