One of the greatest obstacles to overcoming teen drug addiction is a lack of important, impartial information about treatment and the nature of addiction itself. The following ten points have been culled from addiction treatment experts who have helped countless young people and their families through

10 Important Things to Know About Teen Drug Rehab

1. It all starts with an intervention. The teenage years are a naturally rebellious time – and when drugs or alcohol are involved it means that the young person in question may be unable or unwilling to admit that they have a problem. That’s where an intervention comes into play. A drug intervention is a “surprise” meeting where family and friends gather together to show the teen how serious their problem has become. The end goals of a teen drug intervention are to a) get the teen to admit that they have a drug problem, and b) get them to an appropriate treatment facility immediately.
2. Detox is NOT rehab. Many detox clinics claim that they can “cure” teen drug addiction in a matter of weeks. The reality is that there is no true cure for drug addiction, and that it takes a combination of detox, counseling and aftercare to help the individual get clean and stay sober for the rest of their life.
3. There are several different types of teen addiction counseling. Teen drug addiction programs differ according to the treatment philosophies of the team on staff. However, just about every program is built around a foundation of addiction counseling. These therapy sessions come in three common forms: individual (one-on-one private sessions with a therapist), group (sharing experiences with other teens in the program – while creating a strong support network along the way) and family therapy (where loved ones have a chance to heal, rebuild trust and learn how to communicate and support one another).
4. Teen drug rehab addresses youth-specific issues. One of the reasons why teen drug rehab programs are so successful is because they only speak to those issues that are relevant to addicted teens. For example, if an adolescent were to enter an “adult” drug rehab program, there may not be enough emphasis on core issues such as self-image problems, coping with physical or mental abuse, peer pressure, etc. At teen drug rehab, these are the main areas of focus – providing a more effective treatment plan for young men and women.
5. Teen drug rehab saves lives. Without the high level of professional help offered at teen drug rehab programs, countless teens would have seen their lives spiral out of control (or worse). Instead, the caring professionals who work at these programs are able to help the young people they treat STOP the abuse of drugs – and teach them the long-lasting lessons required to live a long, fulfilling life.
