Everyone likes to feel appreciated and recognized for their accomplishments. Give me an award for doing what you want me to do and watch me do it again.

Just as not feeling appreciated and valued can result in employees quitting their jobs, feeling appreciated, valued, and recognized for accomplishments can result in boosting employee motivation and job satisfaction.

Recognitions and awards provide positive feedback to an employee that he is delivering the "goods" for the company and that the company appreciates his accomplishments in a very positive way.

Some Employee Recognitions that Boost Employee Motivation and Job Satisfaction

Employee of the Month - this is basically an employee recognition rather than an award unless an actual award accompanies this. Being recognized publicly as an employee who has "stood out" from among the rest for even one month can boost morale and that sense of being appreciated and valued. If a plaque or picture is posted for all to see, that will reinforce the value to the employee. Unfortunately, most of these are not accompanied by what the employee actually did to receive the award. That decreases the value of this award.

A Phone Call from a High Ranking Official in the Organization - thanking the employee in person for his accomplishments. A high ranking official knows of the accomplishment and took time out of his busy day to show the value of the accomplishment by making that personal call to the employee. Unfortunately, there is no proof in the form of physical evidence that this has occurred. It can boost employee morale and employee motivation but only memories are left to remind the employee that this has happened. There is nothing to show to others as proof.

Certificate of Appreciation - These usually are signed by an official, a short title of the award, and a brief description of what the award is for. The employee can hang this in his office area to remember the award and help keep him motivated and also use the certificate in applications for promotions and other jobs.

A Letter of Recognition or Appreciation - a letter written by a manager detailing what the employee has accomplished and the value it had for the organization is a good way of recognizing an employee's accomplishments. This can be more valuable than a certificate if there is more written detail of the employee accomplishments. A certificate does not allow much room for that detail that can be addressed in a letter. The letter should be done using a organization letterhead of the official writing the letter. This adds to the value and integrity of the recognition.

If you want to increase the value of this, have the letter written by a high ranking official in the company. Letters of Recognition or Appreciation have value because the accomplishment and the value it had for the organization can be addressed in detail and can have beneficial uses in the future. The employee can choose to have the letter framed and hang it in his office area. The employee can use it as additional information to accompany applications for promotions in the company or to seek a job with another company.

A Picture of Employee Receiving the Award from a High Ranking Official in the Organization - this increases the value of the award especially if the official signs the picture. The employee can hang this picture in his office area to remind him of the recognition for his accomplishment.
