When writing children's books, the first phase in writing a book is usually the most difficult. You've no doubt satisfied yourself that your concept for a book is certainly a winner, and now you just have to convert that inspiration into reality. But to be able to do that you will actually have to write it! Cue the little devil on your shoulder saying "I do not have time, I can do it tomorrow, Just take the dog for a walk first" etc.
So, what's the best way to go about it? Well, listed here are a few ideas to assist you in getting started.
1. Identify what's preventing you making a start.
Take some time and consider this. Make a list. Is it Job commitments? Family commitments? Social commitments? Maybe you are surrounded by distractions, or possibly you just cannot stay focused?
There's one simple method to handle this - lock your self away. This is an important approach. Block out at the least 3 hours of your time and let everybody know you can't be interrupted. Then take away all types of interruption - turn off your mobile, your home phone, your email and anything else that might interrupt you.
Writing children's books demands dedication and a key thing you'll be able to commit is your time. If you expect your children's book to turn out to be a reality it's important to do this.
2. Have a plan
Set your self some goals. Say to yourself 'This week I'll finish the outline for my book.' This may seem daunting, but once you commit your self to doing it you will be pleased with yourself when it comes true. But do not stop there, make sure that you now set the next specific target, and have a list of additional targets either written down (preferably), or at least, in mind.
3. Keep a journal of progress
Every day write a brief sentence saying what you have accomplished, then you'll have a tangible document in your hands and evidence that you're truly making progress. Read through your journal at frequent intervals, especially if you're finding it difficult to keep focused.
4. If all else fails
When you simply can't get started or are struggling with author's block there may be one technique that may help. Simply write! Get a clean sheet of paper in your hands and simply begin writing - anything. It could be complete garbage to start with but it'll start the creative machine and you will be surprised how soon your writing becomes focused and your project will get underway.
With a bit of luck this information might have given you some concepts and inspiration for beginning that long awaited children's book.
I want to wish you every success in your career as a children's book writer.
